Telecommunications is Being Redefined by Digitalization
According to the Gartner Institute, there will be more than 50 billion connected objects in the world by 2020, generating a market value of nearly USD 3 trillion. These figures reflect current growth patters including a growth of 31% in 2017.
In our opinion, two phenomena need to be highlighted.
First: we must understand that the issue is no longer about connecting the billions of humans on the planet by managing subscriptions to telephone, mobile or Internet networks. Today, a second revolution is in motion, enabling machine-to-machine communications (M2M*, D2D**) through the interconnection of billions of objects (the Internet of Things, or IoT) via mobile networks. Moreover, this extremely dynamic environment can offer significant potential in terms of application development that aligns with AKKA’s deep cross-sector expertise: transport and tourism, health, home automation, robotics and AI, industry 4.0, and energy networks in particular.
The telecommunications sector is taking full advantage of this digital transformation: the proliferation of mobile telephones, the anticipated arrival of 5G, the emergence of new applications linked to connected TVs, and the development of smart cities where users and infrastructures can communicate with each other. (synchronization of traffic lights, autonomous cars, autonomous boats, tourist information, environmental protection, etc.)
